Suicide in Rural Australia:

What was the issue about?

Suicide rates in rural and remote areas of Australia are significantly higher than the national average and very remote regions have suicide rates more than double that of major capital cities.

What is causing the issue?
People living in rural and remote Australia may experience considerable difficulties and hardship, including financial difficulties and isolation, and they may not have access to support services during tough times. They are more likely to have access to harmful weapons, which unfortunatlely can be used for self harm.

Who is affected?
Generally the families and friends of the person who died, they must now cope with the hardship of the issue. The community would also be affected because, generally the communites are small and tight.

What can be done?
promote understanding and education on how you can cope with the difficulties of living in a rural environment. Promote acceptance for talking about emotional issues and hardships. Create community networks to build reslience and coping strategies among people in rural and remote parts of Australia.
